The start of of online turn based chess?

The BeholderBoard is a Perl script that lets you play chess with your friends (if you have a webserver). It was released as unsupported freeware in 1999.

Like all such software, the BeholderBoard Virtual Chess-set is distributed as-is, and no warranty of any kind is provided. Good policy on all software is to check to your own satisfaction that the software adheres to your local requirements, especially with regard to security, before making it executable over a public network. The script passes Perl's taint checking (try perl -cwT), which may make you feel more comfortable. Nonetheless, Beholder accepts no responsibility for any loss or damage (or loss of productivity) whether caused directly or indirectly as result of the use of this software.

One of the first chess server scripts that was freely available to download, some might say this script started a new type of online chess however, I think we have to look a little further back then 1998.
